Project Overview

Mangrove forests along the coast of Sumbawa once protected fishing communities from erosion, storms and tidal surges while supporting rich marine biodiversity. Over recent decades, large areas of mangroves have been cleared or degraded owing to aquaculture expansion, illegal land conversion and logging. This has weakened natural coastal protection and reduced fish breeding grounds, directly affecting local livelihoods.


This project focuses on restoring degraded mangrove areas that are critical for both ecosystem recovery and community resilience, rebuilding natural defences while supporting sustainable coastal livelihoods.


The project will restore 100 hectares of degraded mangrove forest using locally appropriate species and community-based planting methods.

Restoration will be combined with silvofishery approaches that allow communities to benefit economically while protecting the mangrove ecosystem. Approximately 200 local households are participating in planting, maintenance and monitoring activities, strengthening long-term stewardship of the restored areas.


The mangrove species to be planted include: 

  • Rhizophora mucronata (red mangrove_coastal protection)
  • Rhizophora apiculata (red mangrove _wave attenuation)
  • Bruguiera gymnorhiza (large-leafed mangrove _habitat diversity)

Project Impact

Within 5 years, restored mangrove forests will stabilize coastlines, improve fish nursery habitats and strengthen natural protection against storms and erosion.


Participating households will benefit from improved fisheries, diversified income through silvofishery practices and increased resilience to climate-related coastal risks

Project Overview


Sumbawa Island is part of the West Nusa Tenggara province and is located approximately 300 km east of Bali. This region is ecologically significant and rich in biodiversity, as it encompasses three major ecosystem types: (1) mangrove forests, (2) dryland forests, and (3) marine ecosystems. In particular, the mangrove forests along the coastline serve as vital habitats for marine life and act as a natural barrier that protects coastal communities from typhoons, tidal waves, and coastal erosion. However, over the past few decades, these mangroves have been severely degraded due to the expansion of aquaculture, illegal land conversion, and logging.


This project aims to establish new mangrove forests and restore and conserve existing ones on Sumbawa Island. Through these efforts, we seek to protect local communities from coastal erosion and saltwater intrusion, while also contributing to climate change mitigation and biodiversity conservation.


The mangrove species to be planted include: 

  • Rhizophora mucronata
  • Rhizophora apiculata
  • Bruguiera gymnorhiza

The mangrove forests established through this project will serve as habitats for marine life, thereby enhancing biodiversity. In addition, they will act as effective carbon sinks by capturing carbon from the land, sea, and atmosphere.
