Project Overview

Mangrove forests along the Red River Delta have long protected coastal communities from erosion, storm surges and saltwater intrusion while supporting fisheries and biodiversity.


Since the 1950s, however, around 80 percent of mangrove cover in the region has been lost owing to coastal development, land conversion and prolonged environmental pressure. As mangroves disappeared, villages became more exposed to typhoons and rising seas and livelihoods dependent on coastal ecosystems grew increasingly fragile.


This project focuses on restoring degraded mangrove areas in Thai Binh Province so that healthy mangrove belts can once again serve as natural coastal defences and sustain local livelihoods.

The project will restore 500 hectares of degraded coastal land through the planting of locally adapted mangrove species. Restoration activities will strengthen shoreline stability, reduce saltwater intrusion and support the recovery of marine habitats.


Approximately 200 local households are engaged in planting and early maintenance, helping ensure long-term protection of restored mangrove forests.


The mangrove species to be planted include:

  • Sonneratia caseolaris (Mangrove apple: coastal stabilisation)
  • Kandelia obovata (Kandelia mangrove: wave attenuation)
  • Avicennia marina (Grey mangrove: salt tolerance and resilience)

Project Impact

Within 5 years, restored mangrove belts already begin to reduce coastal erosion, protect villages from storm surges and improve fish nursery habitats.


Communities will experience greater resilience to extreme weather events while mangrove recovery will strengthen biodiversity and long-term coastal stability across the Red River Delta.

Project Overview


The Red River Delta region in Viet Nam is located approximately 110 km southeast of the capital, Hanoi. In particular, the forests in the Thai Binh area within the Red River Delta are primarily composed of mangrove species. These forests have served as habitats for a variety of flora and fauna and have played a critical role in protecting local communities from coastal erosion and saltwater intrusion. However, since the 1950s, about 80% of the mangrove forests have been destroyed over the past 50 years, weakening their ecological functions.


This project aims to establish new mangrove forests and enhance and conserve existing ones in the Red River Delta region. Through these efforts, the project contributes to protecting local communities from coastal erosion and saltwater intrusion, while also supporting climate change mitigation and biodiversity conservation.


The mangrove species to be planted include:

  • Sonneratia caseolaris
  • Kandelia obovata
  • Avicennia marina

Project Impact


When the mangrove forests established through the project grow healthily, they not only enhance biodiversity but also stabilize the coastline and protect coastal villages from natural disasters. In fact, in 2024, Thai Binh in the Red River Delta was directly affected by Typhoon Yagi, which was recorded as the worst typhoon in 30 years. However, the mangrove forests that had been established helped mitigate the impact of the typhoon and safeguarded local communities.
